Through the entire process, students synthesize their understanding of the JNC and are charged with the following task: A pretend company named PaveItAll, Inc. wants to bulldoze a portion of the JNC and requested permission to do this from the Township Planning Commission. The students previously were to use all of the year's work on their ecosystem and develop a persuasive letter to the Township Manager urging that the Township deny PaveItAll, Inc.'s request to bulldoze their ecosystem in the JNC.
The Township Office was asked if they would consider receiving the best of each classroom's letters to make it a truly authentic experience for the students. The Manager graciously has worked with us and developed a response to the pretend situation. One letter from each class was selected by a collaboration of the Technology Teacher, Writing Teacher, and Language Arts Coach and delivered to the Township Office. Above are sample letters delivered to the Township. The students were delighted when their letters were responded to and enthusiastically read the responses to their classmates.
Most recently, the students' charge has been revised to create a video advertisement to persuade the Township Manager to deny PaveItAll's request. Above are sample commercial advertisements created. The Township Manager has graciously agreed to view the exemplar videos sent to him and return a response to the pretend situation.
